2024 Cover Artist – Eluster Richardson

Eluster Richardson’s art strikes a soulful chord. “Uplifting, inspiring, and enlightening” are all words frequently used to describe the experience. Born and raised in Tallahassee, Florida, Eluster began painting as a young child and currently maintains his studio in his hometown. With a fascination of local history and the people and places of North Florida inspiring the body of his work, it has been long treasured by history and art lovers of the region. He is adept in oil and pencil, but his medium of preference is watercolor.

Eluster has earned a well-respected place in the local art community. He is the Artist-in-Residence for the Riley House Museum and Resource Center of African-American History and Culture, which also houses his historical works collection. Eluster has been involved with LeMoyne Arts for several decades and continues to be a cherished partner. He also previously served as President of the Watercolor Society.

He has received numerous awards for his paintings, including LeMoyne’s Chain of Parks Art Festival 2022 “Best in Show”. His works have been exhibited in a variety of galleries, including the Museum of Florida History, LeMoyne Art Gallery, Florida State Museum of Art, Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art, and Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. Collections of his work can be seen at the Custom House Museum in Clarkesville, Tenn., Polk County Museum of Art in Lakeland Fla., Riley House Museum/Center, Gadsden Art Center Museum in Quincy, All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla., Florida League in Tallahassee and Leon County Libraries (just to name a few). His most recent series of work includes a Quilting Series and a Forgotten Coast Series of landscapes.

“I like to explore the beauty of how sunlight seems to travel across the marsh grass in landscapes of the Forgotten Coast, inviting the viewer to see a palette of warm colors. There is an intimate, personal moment of reflection through all of my artwork.”

2023 Cover Artist – Anne Hempel

Anne Hempel, a Florida State University graduate, has been a full-time artist for more than 15 years. Previously an elementary school teacher, she has also taught English in Japan, and she says she loves being outdoors and volunteering in her community. Hempel creates all of her work on hand-crafted wood panels built by her husband, a biologist. Her technique includes applying multiple layers of thickened acrylic paint, creating an impasto style that reflects light and adds expressiveness to the painting. The canvas being wood makes it “the perfect surface” Hempel says to use a palette knife and various tools to carve into the wet paint, creating “kind of like a three-dimensional sculptural rendering.”

“Listening to music that moves me while I paint is a must and it weaves its way into every painting,” adds Hempel. “I am fearless when it comes to experimenting with color and texture, my technique is always evolving. I also live in a swampy, heavily wooded area with trails and boardwalks leading to endless natural vignettes that offer inspiration.”

“The Chain of Parks Art Festival brings some of the nation’s top fine artists to the Capital City as a way to not only expand on the opportunity for regional art collectors but also introduce fine arts to those who may not have experienced it,” said Festival Chair Kelly Dozier. “We are proud this year to announce Anne Hempel and her work ‘Wood Whittlers,’ a beautiful representation of North Florida nature, for this year’s cover art.”

See Anne at the 2022 festival with a happy patron!

2020 Cover Artist: Kelly Rsavy

Kelly currently lives in Tallahassee and St. George Island, Florida. Being primarily a self-taught artist her oil paintings range from landscapes, figurative studies, and still-life’s as well as an occasional abstract. Her subjects, media and techniques vary vastly due to the fact she wants to experience and try everything.

Over the last three years she has been traveling around Florida doing a number of art shows. She states,” I am so excited about the opportunity to meet with collectors and network with other artists. There are so many talented artists out there and I learn so much from them while on the road.”

Making the pursuit of art a full-time commitment was the best and most fulfilling thing she ever did.

About the creative process.

While she enjoys the quiet solitude of her studio, she delights in painting on location and is doing more plein-air than ever. She states, “Painting from life creates an intimacy with the subject that I just can’t get from photographs, and it heightens my sense of spontaneity. That energy is translated to the canvas in and out of the studio. I don’t want to be branded as an artist that only paints one thing. How will I grow and learn from doing that. Also, what interests me most is the relationship between the color harmony, patterns and shapes. I like to view life at a glance and try to capture it on canvas. I want my art to engage viewers, like those who pass by while painting on location and have them stop and experience the work with me.”

2019 Cover Artist: JOHN H. C. DAVIS

John earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts with a focus in printmaking from Tulane University, New Orleans, LA in 1986. Shortly after graduation, John moved to Florida and now lives in Pensacola where he is continually influenced by his coastal surroundings.

His work aims to capture the subtle designs of nature, using a range of printmaking techniques, which he has developed into his own graphic designs with clear lines and repetitive patterns. The color scheme of his work is heavily influenced by the brilliant colors of the home of his birth, Puerto Rico, and those of the Florida coast.  Recently, he has included the use of traditional patterns observed during recent trips to the UK and Europe.

His preferred medium is a linoleum block print on handmade paper.  Each piece is hand pulled and individually painted with acrylic paint.  As a professional picture framer, John also builds picture frames with and embellishes borders specially designed to enhance each piece of art.  As a new feature, he is providing mirrors with borders which incorporate the features of the original linoleum block prints and providing a utilitarian purpose.

John is constantly focused on producing new pieces of art.  He is an award winning artist, frequently participating in festivals and on exhibit in select galleries throughout Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Georgia.

2018 Cover Artist: LISA ROGERS

Lisa Rogers is a 5th generation Floridian descended from pioneering farmers who came to the state in the 1840’s.  They put down roots in what is now the Ocala National Forest, where Lisa lives in the family’s 150-year-old cracker house on the same land her ancestors settled.  She has two grown sons (26 and 29) who have given her constant support and motivation in pursuing her career as an artist.

Lisa grew up in “Old Florida” style, surrounded by extended family and countless friends.  She was especially influenced by her grandmother, a remarkable woman who made hats from palm fronds, clothes from scraps of antique cloth, and baskets from pine needles.  She once made a pair of slippers for Lisa, cutting the sole from an old inner tube, and crocheting the tops.  Early on, Lisa discovered a life-long passion for creating art, and an appreciation for using whatever materials were available.

Though she worked for attorneys in Ocala for many years, Lisa’s desire to create never diminished.  As soon as her boys were old enough, she went back to college and began to re-engage in the arts.  She tried her hand at various crafts, but always found painting to be the medium that allowed the greatest self-expression.  Like many artists, she is mostly self-taught, though with the help of countless books, classes, and workshops, and endless experimentation on canvas.

Lisa’s work reflects her Florida roots and her paintings include landscapes, seascapes, animals, and abstracts.  To add interest and life, she uses palette knives, brushes, and other implements, applying acrylic paints, inks, charcoal, and crayons.  She adds and subtracts the various mediums until just the right balance in color and texture is achieved.

Art festivals are the primary venue for exhibiting her work, and Lisa participates every year in 20 or more festivals across Florida and the Southeast.  Her philosophy is simple — painting is meant to be enjoyed!  She relishes the creative process, and when Lisa produces a painting she is happy with, and which also speaks to others, she knows she has accomplished what she set out to do.

2017 Cover Artist: DEBO GROOVER

How Debortina came to be: We are two- Debo and Tina, although Tina refuses to call me Debo so to her I am Deb.  Thus we became Deb or Tina- Debortina. I thought long and hard about this name. I must have said it a thousand times – out loud. The naming of an adventure like ours is very important. We have two very distinct skill sets and personalities. Together we are quite harmonious and copasetic. I love this word and I have used for ten years before I actually looked up the definition. Fortunately, I was surrounded by literary types at the time and was correctly introduced to its proper usage.

Although I am often the face of our studio, it takes two of us to make a whole. I make most of the larger pieces and I usually go solo to the shows while Tina is back at the studio doing the important work – managing the studio, managing me, managing our menagerie of dogs, and managing the money. In addition to these monumental tasks, she is also our communicator. She is the voice of the studio. I just make the work.

“I experience the landscape and all the life forms it nourishes and translate those experiences into drawings. The drawings are transferred to blocks of linoleum or wood. The slow, meditative process of carving distills and clarifies the images. I print their surfaces onto hand-made paper using a century old Charles Brand Etching Press and then watercolor directly into the prints.”  www.lesliepeebles.com

2013 Cover Artist: GUSTAVO CASTILLO

Gustavo Castillo’s mastery of the medium is apparent. His mastery of the nuance united abstract and representational imagery. His earlier works brought order to seemingly random arrangement of palm fronds or grape leaves by building on a strong but well-concealed arrangement of abstract elements. In his current paintings, the abstract foundation underlying his work has been brought center stage. His images shift  effortlessly from the familiar shapes and colors to near-pure abstract interactions of form and color in a way that is both playful and deeply satisfying. www.CastilloLagosStudio.com

2012 Cover Artist: NATALIA ANDREEVA

The artistic talents of Natalia Andreeva stem from the hand of a woman born and bred on the harsh yet beautiful landscapes of Siberia, in Novosibirsk, Russia. “Outstanding as always. It’s the classiest event in Tallahassee!”
